Antigua Guatemala, sometimes called Antigua or La Antigua by the locals, is a city located in the central mountains of Guatemala. Founded on March 10, 1543 in Panchoy Valley, it was the first Spanish colonial capital in Central America, hence its present name, which means “old Guatemala.”

In 1543, the Spanish conquistadores called it La Muy Noble y Muy Leal Ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala (”The Very Noble and Very Loyal City of Santiago of the Knights of Guatemala”) to honor their patron saint, Santiago (St. James).

Situated in Panchoy Valley in the central mountains of Guatemala, Antigua Guatemala was the first Spanish colonial capital in Central America.
